Marlborough Turns On New Scheme Helping People To Go Solar

By Kristy Hoare on in Solar Power News In New Zealand

As of 2019 ratepayers in Marlborough can take full advantage of new solar power opportunities, with access to the council's new funding initiative. Ratepayers are encouraged to use the funding when having companies install solar panels and battery storage.

An extension of Marlborough Council’s Energy Efficiency scheme, solar power will now be part of the funding service for people having heating sources, insulation, and solar hot water heating installed.

The funding service for solar panels simply means adding a loan repayment cost to the homeowners rates invoice,  as per request of the council. Interest of 5.5% will be charged for the loan, with an additional administration fee and a repayment period of nine years.  Certainly a reasonable cost when measured against the loans of financing giants Gem Visa or Q-card. If you already have a mortgage, we suggest putting the solar power system onto that.

It’s fantastic to see a council actively encourage the uptake of solar power, and enable more people and families in the community to choose solar power. By making power more affordable, and by selecting cleaner energy sources, everyone in the community stands to benefit. The Hawkes Bay Council was the first New Zealand Council to offer solar power funding, a trend I’m sure many more councils will follow.
