If you’re thinking about getting solar panels, here’s some good news - from September 1, 2025, the people installing your solar system will need to have extra training and official certification. This means better quality and safer installations for you.
Why the change?
By law, only registered and licensed electricians and inspectors can do certain electrical jobs. Solar power systems that connect to the main electricity supply (called Mains Parallel Generation) now require installers to have a special endorsement. This ensures they know exactly how to design and install these systems safely and properly.
Who can install your solar system after September 2025?
Installers must be officially registered as one of these, with the special endorsement for mains parallel generation systems:
- Electrical Inspector (with Mains Parallel endorsement)
- Electrician (with Mains Parallel endorsement)
- Electrical Engineer (with Mains Parallel endorsement)
What does this endorsement involve?
To get this special endorsement, electricians need to:
- Be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) for at least two years
- Complete two specific micro-credential courses:
- Grid-connected PV Systems, Design and Install (Level 4)
- Grid-connected Battery Storage Systems, Design and Install (Level 4)
These courses show they’re qualified to handle both solar panels and battery systems connected to the grid.
