Reviews From Solar Power System Owners

We have asked people that brought a solar power system after getting 3 quotes through My Solar Quotes how their solar power systems are going! We asked:
What size system did you install?
How long has your solar power system been running for?
How did you find the solar installation?
How have you found the performance of the solar power system?
Do you have any other comments that you would like to share with New Zealanders thinking about going solar?

Comments on the system performance: "saving $20-30 per month on electricity plus send around $10 per month to grid"

Size: 5k W

Running for: 11 months

Expected return on investment: 60

Expected pay back period: 6 -7

Comments on the installation: "yes they were. first 1 hour to check location to install items and the second day all done. Third time came for a further check up on the system to ensure it is working well. "

Comments on the system performance: "Brilliant. Savings by solar energy use as well as sale of units to the grid. Everyone should go for solar. "

Advice: "Conduct research on which installer (company) is good as there are a few who do not know quite well. Get a good quote and go to install. My other recommendation is to install battery system too. I did not do it that time but geared to do so now."

Review Date: 10/02/2021

Size: 7kW

Running for: Two months

Comments on the installation: "The install was a breeze with a team of very experienced guys, who we would have no hesitation recommending to anyone contemplating installing solar. Hubands are absolutely brilliant at their job from designing right through to commissioning, no regrets."

Comments on the system performance: "We are producing over a megawatt each month for the two months it has been up and running. As far as saving money that’s another issue/saga. We signed up with Ecotricity and we are still waiting for a final bill for December!! Our first “bill “ came in at $624 which apart from being absurd, is way more than twice or normal bill prior to solar. They seem to think the problem is at their end and are working on it. Needless to say we are changing companies on the 26th of February. They aren’t very professional and there is one poor woman, Karen who is doing her best to sort it but really, they are a worry and I wished I had read google reviews beforehand."

Advice: "Do it, you won’t regret it."

Review Date: 09/02/2021

Size: 3.2kw

Running for: 2months

Expected pay back period: 7 years

Comments on the installation: "Took one day. Installers were great, on time and very polite cleaned up well"

Comments on the system performance: "I have been very impressed. We have cut our bill from about 200 per month to about 60. "

Advice: "If you are permanently at home you can make the greatest savings. The app allows you to judge the best time to turn in appliances such as tumble dryers etc to make the greatest savings. I have programmed my spa to heat during the most efficient time. If you have the cash in the bank the power savings are greater than the interest you get in the bank"

Review Date: 18/06/2020

Size: 5.3 w

Running for: 20 months

Expected return on investment: 22.5% actually measured - better than expected.

Expected pay back period: 5 years (less because our business got the GST back and gets to depreciate it).

Comments on the installation: "Yes. 6 Hours."

Comments on the system performance: "It has produced more than expected. We hoped to get approximately 4 hours of full output per day (average) and getting closer to 5 hours full output (average). Often get over 30 Kw hours/day. "

Advice: "Don't wait if you can afford it. Electricity prices are only going to go up."

Review Date: 05/01/2020

Size: 3kW

Running for: 2 months

Expected return on investment: 12

Expected pay back period: 6 years

Comments on the installation: "Three quarters of a day"

Comments on the system performance: "Performance is excellent so far. Savings has not showed up in my bill as yet. "

Advice: "Government should subsidised this initiative "

Bruce, Far North, Northland

Review Date: 15/01/2019

Size: 2.7

Running for: 46 days

Expected return on investment: 8%

Expected payback period: 7

Comments on the installation: "One day and the installers were excellent"

Comments on the system performance: "Hard to judge after such a limited time, our first bill was $55 less, just under a 3rd of the account. As yet our meter has not been adjusted to feed excess back to grid so no credit, which I estimate would have been about $15."

Advice: "While we are happy with the result to date it's a shame that a battery storage system is so expensive, as we produced 360 kw and used 400kw, with storage our bill would have been approx $12.80."

Tim, Whangarei, Northland

Review Date: 02/06/2018

Size: we will be installing a 30Kw system

Running for: it hasnt yet

Expected return on investment: Huband's (the installer) estimates 19.6% per year over the 25 year warranty period of the system. This is a saving of $216k over that time assuming a 2.5% increase in power costs and also allowing to the savings paying back the cost of the system. They have also factored in depreciation values.

Expected pay back period: 4.5-5 years

Comments on the installation: "we are waiting to start"

Comments on the system performance: "I can answer that after it is installed"

Advice: "I really like the service you offer and the assistance you have given us. We have received a competitive price from a local supplier/installer and I feel you have be very helpful in obtaining that. We had received an offer from Super Charged Solar and have heard some terrible stories about them since. World Solar would have been or next choice but there was a degree of smooth salesmanship I found a little disappointing. They wanted to know "what price we have to beat" and did not offer a what we wanted."

Review Date: 08/04/2018

Size: 4kw 14 panels

Running for: 6 weeks

Expected return on investment: Excellent

Expected pay back period: 10-12 as we have batteries too

Comments on the installation: "Hubands Energy in Whangarei was the first one to contact us when we did the 3 quote on website. Never heard from any one else, but totally happy we got a local company to install it!"

Comments on the system performance: "Far North, great sunshine hours, logic to try and make use of the sun.Power bill $24....... hoping for less next time!!!"

Advice: "Easy to do washing while the sun shines or power up your gadgets while the sun is out as you know it is not going to cost!!"

Running for: 49 days (I keep a running log)

Comments on the installation: "Yes they respected our property and were very proficient, despite inclement weather."

Comments on the system performance: "Yes, the providers forecast have been spot on for June and July."

Advice: "Yes, we are saving about half the kWh on our previous power bills, because we're very conscious of switching off lights in unattended rooms, running laundry and dishwashers in separate times of day, etc despite being the lowest solar energy in mid-winter months."

Comments on the installation: "The installer was great and very pleased with the care taken by the installers."

Comments on the system performance: "Very pleased with the system and the feed back from Enphase is great would recommend the system."

Advice: "The system is great once installed there is no further action required and Enphase keeps us informed of the power we are producing."
